You use the word ‘said’ in dialogue because that’s what people do - they say things. People don’t cry words, they cry tears. People don’t bark or howl, animals do. You don’t grin words any more than you frown words. You say words. The rest of your writing should be strong enough that the reader knows exactly how your subjects are saying their dialogue. Don’t use synonyms you wouldn’t use in real life, and don’t use synonyms as a crutch.
